Trelleborgen - a Trellefortress
In 1988 archaeologists found traces of a circular fortress, a so called Trellefortress, it was located at the highest point in the city of Trelleborg. With the finding of the fortress the city's intriguing name was explained. The Trellefortress as it looks today is a reconstruction that was finished in 1995. A quarter of the fortress is rebuilt in its original location, which means that it's now situated in the middle of the modern city of Trelleborg. It also contains a reconstructed medieval house – also found on this place.
Outside of the fortress there is now a Viking farmhouse surrounded of small workshops and cultivations. The Trellefortress and the surrounding area is an Open-air museum and are open for visitors all year. In the museum building which opened in 2007 there is a Viking exhibition with focus on the fortress and local findings.
The museum shop is filled with copies of Viking age jewellery, souvenirs, toys and literature, there is something for every visitor, the common tourist family as well as the hardcore re-enactor, in all price ranges.
During summer the museum café is open and full of delicious coffee, ice cream and freshly baked cookies and the visitors can choose to sit indoor or outdoor, always with a full view of the Trellefortress.
Specially guided tours or other activities can be booked all year round.
